Λίγο πριν το ξέσπασμα του Β’ Παγκοσμίου πολέμου στην επαρχιακή Γαλλία. Η Πατρίσια είναι μια από τις έξι κόρες του δύστροπου Πασκάλ Αμορέτι, ο οποίος ζει μοναχός την οικογένεια του μετά τον θάνατο της συζύγου του. Η 18χρονη Πατσίσια είναι η μεγαλύτερη από τις κόρες και η «πριγκίπισσα» του πατέρα της. Κάθε πριγκίπισσα, όμως, χρειάζεται κι έναν πρίγκιπα κι αυτός έρχεται στο πρόσωπο του Ζακ, του γιου του τοπικού σιδηρουργού. Η Πατρίσια θα ενδώσει και θα βρεθεί έγκυος τη στιγμή που ο Ζακ φεύγει ως πιλότος για τον πόλεμο. Όταν το μαθαίνει ο Πασκάλ, έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με τους γονείς του Ζακ που θεωρούν την οικογένεια του Πασκάλ παρακατιανή.
