Batic was not part of the investigation because he was a childhood friend of brothel operator Harry Schneider, for whom the victim supposedly worked. But the total indifference of the defendant irritated him. Back in the office, he asks again for the file of the convicted Romanian, because in all his years of service he had never experienced such a quick confession and not a single attempt to reduce his sentence.
